Our Mission

The Evangelism and Fellowship Commission at Westkirk is charged with the responsibility of coordinating the welcoming and incorporation of newcomers into the congregation, promoting evangelistic outreach into the community, and promoting and encouraging the development of a healthy sense of community within the congregation. Our mission is to help others Know Christ and to make Him Known by sponsoring special outreach ministry events, assisting other commissions and program groups, and developing ministry opportunities which effectively reflect our presence in the community.

Alpha

Alpha is a ten-week opportunity to explore the validity and relevance of the Christian faith for our lives today. It is a practical introduction to the basics of Christianity with loads of opportunity for debate and discussion. The style of Alpha is informal, friendly and non-pressured. The Alpha course runs twice each year at Westkirk, once in the Fall (September - October) and once in the Spring (March – May).

House Kirks

At Westkirk we call our small groups House Kirks. A House Kirk is a gathering of eight to twelve people who purposefully come together to encourage each other in their faith in Jesus Christ and have the loving guidance of a small group facilitator. The House Kirk ministry at Westkirk is a biblical way for congregations to serve members’ needs, equip them for a life of discipleship and reach out to others with Jesus’ love.

New Light

Westkirk's new ministry for those experiencing depression (themselves or others), meets on the second Tuesday evening of each month. Invite someone and offer to bring them along! Donna Halfhill, the founder/facilitator of the group that meets at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines, will facilitate our group as we wait for the Lord to identify and train a facilitator of our own. Please be in prayer about who God might have lead and participate.

On the fourth Tuesday evening of each month (except in December), New Light will also host a presentation by a clinician on the staff the Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, here in Des Moines.
Please join us as we learn more about healthy living - physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Summer Outdoor Movie Series

Once a month, June through September, we host an outdoor movie night on the church lawn at Westkirk. This is a fun, family-friendly event that provides an excellent opportunity for the congregation to invite friends, family members, and neighbors to Westkirk for a time of fellowship and fun.

Fall for Urbandale

Each year in September, the Evangelism and Fellowship Commission hosts a family friendly activity at the annual Fall for Urbandale community celebration. This year’s celebration will be held on September 21 -22nd at Walker Johnston Park in Urbandale.
